the polls will shed some light on who will win? forget about it. cnn editor paul stein hauser is here to do the math for us. paul, what do the national polls look like? >> two days to go, and we have four polls that are nonpartisan and came out since midnight. let's start with the abc news/"washington post." 48% of likely voters supporting the president. 48% supporting mitt romney. how about nbc news/"wall street journal," pretty much the same story, a 1 percentage point ahead of mitt romney. and pugh research center, they came out with obama with a 3 point advantage. that's within the sampling error. this is just about dead even as we get into the election. >> act what battleground states? >> that's the key here because this is not a popular vote, this is a battle for the states and their electoral votes. we look at those eight battleground states, polls in two of them just came out last night and nee're interesting. this is in des moines, iowa. you have the president with a five-point advantage there and nbc news "wall street journal" maris poll had results that were similar. romney start

of economists surveyed by cnn money, soledad. 125,000 jobs added overall. for net new job creation. the important thing here is the trend. and it is the trend that has been so important to american families. american workers. and the two political campaigns, quite frankly. the president took office with unemployment rate at 7.8%, soledad. and then embarked on a massive stimulus plan and unemployment rate kept rising to 10%. but then started to come down. started to come down and is now back at 7.8%. and we got that number, of course, last month. and that was a big surprise overall. you look at the job creation. this is something that the obama administration talks about a lot. the president took office, there were losing hundreds of thousands of jobs at the end of the bush administration into the obama administration. and now the fight has been, the political fight has been over the durability of the recovery and jobs since then. when you go to the right of that chart you can see we have been adding jobs now for two years but we haven't been adding necessarily enough jobs to every

an egyptian who has been in the thick of it of course. take a look at this. from a cnn ireport. this is violence between police, rioters in tahrir square. this is another piece of video he sent us. this is actually what you're looking at here is a funeral procession. this happened yesterday. this was for a 16-year-old boy who was allegedly killed during one of the protests in cairo, thousands of people showed up to march at that funeral. and earlier he told cnn why he and others are protesting against the president. here's his explanation. >> people should know there are certain goals of the revolution and morsi now is -- he thought they could take back the seats. so when you find thousands filling the squares, thousands marches in the streets of cairo and other city all over egypt, this is -- you should see there is something going wrong and the revolution has negated from its principles and goals. under mubarak there was oppression. now our rights are in danger, even under morsi, our friends are still killed by police. we're being tear gassed, so our life is in continuo

they want real progress and real give and take to get there. 72% in our new cnn poll say they want president obama to compromise with republicans on taxes and spending. and an identical 72% want republicans to do the same, compromise with the other side. as for what compromise should entile, 67%, more than 2 in 3 favor a mix of spending cuts and tax increases. that's what they say real progress would look like. keeping them honest, though, real progress is one thing, washington progress is another. so far at least, we're seeing much more of the second and the first and we're getting late new word that any progress might be stalled. more on that shortly. first, a good example of washington progress. republican lawmakers standing up in a limited way to a beltway power broker named grover norquist over the 1980s era pledge he pressures to sign. promising not to raise taxes, any taxes, ever. >> i'm not obligated on the pledge, i made tennessee ans aware i am honoring the oath when i'm sworn in this january. >> that's one of the handful of republican lawmakers repudiating the pledge. he joins us

. the new cnn/orc poll, when asked is the gop doing enough to cooperate with obama, 70% said no, of americans, whereas when they asked if obama is doing enough to cooperate with the gop, 45% yes, 49% no. clearly the republicans are being predominantly blamed for the breakdown in bipartisanship in washington. the fiscal cliff is a classic opportunity, many would argue, to show the americans you've listened, you've changed, you're ready to do deals that are to the benefit of the american national interest. >> well, i mean, piers, look, the president's the leader of this country and he's got to lead and he's got to take control, and he's got to show the american people that he can put people together and a team together, meaning republicans and democrats, and come up with solutions but so far, piers, we don't even know what the president's plans are. he's done a good job of apparently making americans feel that that's the case, but what he hasn't done a good job is really leading with evidence and with substance on the table as far as what he would do. here's the problem, piers. if
